Spray-applied and sheet membrane waterproofing systems protecting bridge decks from chloride ingress and freeze-thaw damage.
Deck waterproofing prevents de-icing salts and water reaching the reinforcement, which is the single largest cause of premature deck deterioration. Systems include spray-applied liquid membranes, prefabricated sheets and methyl methacrylate (MMA) for rapid return to traffic.
The membrane must bond completely to the prepared concrete so that water cannot track laterally beneath it, and must survive the temperature and movement of the deck without cracking. Bond strength and resistance to hydrostatic back-pressure after surfacing determine whether the system actually protects the deck.
