Rehabilitation restores or increases the load capacity of an existing bridge through section repair, external strengthening and deck waterproofing. Strengthening options include bonded FRP laminates, externally bonded steel plates and additional prestressing, selected to suit the structure and the traffic constraints.
Capacity is increased by adding tensile reinforcement to the member or by introducing a load-relieving system. Bonded systems rely entirely on the quality of the substrate and the adhesive interface, which makes surface preparation and environmental control during application the critical success factors.
