Cold milling removes a controlled depth of pavement surface to correct riding quality, restore skid resistance, or prepare a sound substrate for overlay. Milling machines with automatic grade control allow level corrections without changing the vertical alignment of the road.
A rotating drum fitted with carbide cutting tools fractures the surface layer; the cut material is conveyed directly to waiting trucks. Depth is controlled by an automatic levelling system referencing either a ski or the existing profile, so the finished surface meets the design tolerance.
